Annabelle: Creation

I have to admit being a bit skeptical walking into the theater with this one. I didn’t understand the ‘creation’ aspect from the previews. We had seen how Annabelle started in the first film, what is being created? Was it an alternate story line? I just wasn’t sure what to expect. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the Conjuring universe . They’ve had the most incredible vision when it comes to the horror genre. I love the very vintage style, and the musical scores are unmatched.

I was not disappointed with this film. It was a lot different than the other Conjuring films. There was more ‘overt’ scariness instead of the implied. The demon was present and on screen almost immediately and it genuinely took me by surprise. Instead of a peak of the demons face, or a flash through a shadow, the demon was in your face.

There is nothing scarier to me than an amazing child actor in a scary movie (Mama, anyone???) and Talitha Bateman (Janice) was phenomenal. Her range from scared to being scary was really impressive to me. She had polio in the film and was on crutches. Being the target of demonic activity, I couldn’t help but think, “that’s not fair! The demon can’t pick on someone who can’t run away!”.

The best part of the film was the ending. Without giving too much away there was definitely an ‘AHA!’ moment with a very Insidious feel to it. It definitely wrapped up the film with a great tie in to the other Annabelle film.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. I was on the edge of my seat throughout and it kept me guessing. If you’re a fan of the Conjuring and Insidious universe, I think you will enjoy this too.
