Midnight, Texas (With a mention of Midnight Crossroads)

So I love Charlaine Harrris. I have since high school. I’ve read just about every series she’s put out (with the obvious favorite being the Southern Vampire Mystery novels). So I was genuinely surprised when I saw an trailer for an upcoming show based on one of her series that I had never heard of. Immediately, I hopped on my Kindle and downloaded the first in the series Midnight Crossroads.

It pains me to have to admit this but I struggled through this book. It was written in so many perspectives I found it hard to really connect with any particular character. None of the characters had any depth and the plot was choppy. Every time I thought the story was starting to pick up I was abruptly dropped into a new story with a different character. There were also strange undertones of homophobia and race relations. I understand that it’s small town Texas but some of it felt pretty overt in the language that was chosen.

I’m not sure why but I was still willing to give the show a chance (no, it’s not because I was madly in love with Jerrod from Sex In The City. Okay, maybe a little). I have to say, I am so happy that I did. In the book, Manfred’s character was not as powerful as he is in the show. In the book you don’t really see him use his power at all. Manfred states that he uses psychology and the powers of deduction more than any actual psychic powers. I loved that the show translated that different. I was giggling with delight at the cheesy Ghost Whisperer feel of the show. I also loved the casting of Peter Mensah as Lemuel. In the book Lemuel is as pale as they come from his platinum hair to his “ice melting over concrete” gray eyes. And can we talk about how gorgeous Joe Strong (Jason Lewis) looked with his wings! *Dreamy sigh*

Overall, I am pretty happy with the creative liberties that were taken for this show. By no means am I saying this is a “good” show. If you are like me and can tolerate a silly but fast paced summer series, you will enjoy it too. I will definitely be tuning in next week!
